New build two-bed dwelling (with optional basement providing a third bedroom). Woolwich, London. 2019.
The backland site sits at the top of a hill within a residential setting in southeast London. The plot is surrounded by gardens on all sides, with a narrow access path connecting to Elmdene Road. The constrained access and sloping topography inform a compact, carefully considered proposal that sits discreetly within its context.
The building is designed as a lightweight timber frame structure, constructed in situ to suit the restricted access. External materials are robust and low maintenance, with metal cladding and a green roof to integrate the building into its setting and reduce its visual impact.
The ground floor is arranged as a continuous living space, with a subtle change in level separating the kitchen, dining and living areas. Large glazed doors extend the internal space into the garden, strengthening the connection to the surrounding landscape.
The proposal has been carefully designed to protect the privacy of both occupants and neighbours. Openings are positioned primarily to the south to maximise natural light across both levels. Materials are selected for durability, low maintenance and performance, responding to the constraints and long-term use of the site.
An additional basement proposal arrangement providing extra bedroom, living space, and lower patio area.
